The forthcoming Beastie Boys Book (published 30 October) features several mixtape playlists put together by band membersĀ Mike DĀ and Adam Horovitz. One of these playlists, compiled by Horovitz, brings to life the 1983 dance floor experience at the iconic NYC downtown club, Danceteria.

1983.
“Buffalo Gals” is the song. Danceteria is the place.
It had everything we were, and everything we wanted to be.

Featuring classic 80s pop staples from Yazoo’s ‘Don’t Go’ and Tom Tom Club’s ‘Genius of Love’ to (perhaps) less well-remembered gems by bands like Medium Medium and Killing Joke, this is a playlist to get you up and dancing like it’s 1983 all over again.

‘There was a very specific dance to Danceteria’, writes AD-ROCK in Beastie Boys Book. He says of the first track on his playlist (‘The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight’ by Dominatrix), ‘turn the lights down, maybe get a little drunk (just a little), play it, and I’ll bet you’ll instinctively start doing the Danceteria dance.’ Well here’s your chance… give it a go.
