We have huge news. On October 6th we publish Shock and Awe: Glam Rock and Its Legacy by Simon Reynolds. This is first complete history of Glam Rock by one of the most acclaimed and revered writers of his generation.
As the sixties dream faded, a new flamboyant movement electrified the world: GLAM!
In Shock and Awe, Simon Reynolds explores this most decadent of genres on both sides of the Atlantic. Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Alice Cooper, The Sweet, Gary Glitter, New York Dolls, Sparks, Slade, Suzi Quatro, Cockney Rebel, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Mott The Hoople — all are represented here.
Reynolds charts the retro future sounds, outrageous styles and gender-fluid sexual politics that came to define the first half of the seventies and brings it right up to date with a final chapter on glam in hip hop, Lady Gaga, and the aftershocks of David Bowie’s death.
Shock and Awe is a defining work.
Praise for Simon Reynolds:
‘Looking back, you’d be hard-pressed to name a music journalist more adept at tracking and defining the zeitgeist.’ – Guardian
‘The foremost popular music critic of this era’ – The Times Literary Supplement
‘For a long time, Simon Reynolds has been pretty much the most intelligent and thoughtful commentator on pop music around.’ – Evening Standard
We’re excited to announce publication of the incredible story of The Beach Boys from founding member Mike Love, arriving on September 15th 2016.
The Beach Boys are considered to be the most popular American band in history, with 13 Gold albums, 55 top 100 singles, and four number-one hits. Love has been the lead singer of the group and one of its principal lyricists since its inception in 1961.
In Good Vibrations, he tells the story of his legendary, chaotic, and ultimately triumphant five-decade tenure as the frontman of the quintessential American band, from their Californian roots to international fame.
Mike Love’s credits include such pop classics as “Good Vibrations“, “California Girls“, “I Get Around“, “Fun Fun Fun“, and “Kokomo“. He has received an Ella Award for his song writing, and, as part of The Beach Boys, he is a member of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; the Vocal Group Hall of Fame; and has received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
To accompany the forthcoming publication of Tim Book Two: Vinyl Adventures from Istanbul to San Francisco by Tim Burgess (published by Faber on July 21st), Tim and cover artist Pete Fowler have collaborated with celebrated British audio equipment manufacturer Rega to produce a one off, special edition Tim Book Two turntable, featuring Pete’s striking artwork.
The turntable will be travelling the country on Tim Book Tour (dates below), taking centre stage with Tim and an incredible list of special guests, to broadcast a selection of music featured in the book. Guests on the tour include Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter, Sharon Horgan, Andrew Weatherall, Shaun Keaveny, Gary Neville, Stuart Maconie, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert and Ian Rankin.
Tim Book Tour will also be bringing along Vinyl Adventures, Tim’s very own traveling record shop.
Vinyl Adventures will be stocking records featured in the book, Tim Book Two: The Soundtrack, vinyl releases from Tim’s record label O Genesis and of course books. Tim will be doing a signing session behind the counter in Vinyl Adventures every night.
Finally each night there will be an exhibition of ‘broken vinyl artworks’ of the album covers in the book, including Sandinista by The Clash, The Slider by T-Rex and Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen.
We hope to see you there.
