Rough Trade have announced their books of the year (won last year by our very own Bob Stanley with Yeah Yeah Yeah) and we’re thrilled to have gone one better with Faber Social holding the top two slots.
#1 slot goes to the magnificent Viv Albertine’s Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys. See below for Viv in the shop signing stock last week.
Viv will be in conversation with Thurston Moore at Rough Trade East on December 18. Details here.
#2 slot goes to Future Days by David Stubbs. David already paid a trip to Rough Trade back in August to discuss all things Krautrock. We attended and can confirm it was informative, surprising and humorous.
Your one stop, while you wait, record cleaning service
Named after Original Rockers, his forthcoming book about the inner life of a record shop published by Faber & Faber on April 2 2015, Richard King presents the ‘Original Rockers Vinyl Shine’ at Independent Label Market Nov 29 2014.
A professional, deep groove vinyl cleaning service that will restore your records to the clearest, freshest audio, improve their grading and have you listening with a smile.
Large orders undertaken, fast service, deep cleansing
The Original Rockers Vinyl Shine Service:
Step 1. Your record is passed through a Furutech DeMag LP Demagnetizer (Furutech DeMag)
Step 2. Your record is given a deep clean by the industry standard Clearaudio Smart Matrix Professional record cleaner (Clearaudio Smart Matrix Professional)
Step 3. We rehouse your newly cleaned vinyl in a brand new poly-lined inner sleeve
Each record takes around 4 – 5 mins to pass through our service, should your vinyl need an extra deep clean due to e.g. first generation dust, loose mohair, beer paws, red seal residue, wine glass fingertips or general late night handling, we will send it through the Smart Matrix Professional for another cleansing at no extra cost.
Leave your records with us for a service then browse the tables of the ILM or spend some high grade down time at the adjoining London Brewers Market (conveniently situated near to our stall).
The Original Rockers Vinyl Shine Service Rates:
1 LP £4
3 LPs £10
7 LP £20
7+ LPs happily considered – £ subject to negotiation
12”s also happily considered – £ subject to negotiation
We have a limited amount of pre-loved, hardwearing, thick PVC vinyl covers manufactured in the 1990s that we will include FOC on a first-come, first-served basis (these are now sadly discontinued, but are more robust and far more handsome than the rather flimsy covers on the market today).
Bring your wax then relax, as your VG+ records brush up a grade to NM
Yianni Papoutsis and Scott Collins to donate all proceeds to Meningitis Now
This December Yianni Papoutsis and Scott Collins will publish a limited edition of The MEATliquor Chronicles: Chapter and Verse in celebration of all things meat and liquor. The specially bound copy of the book will come packaged in a bespoke chest containing a julep tin engraved with a unique cocktail recipe and a bottle of Bulleit reserve bourbon signed by Thomas Bulleit. Available to purchase at an RRP of £100 on the MEATliquor website from 1 December, all proceeds will be donated to Meningitis Now, the award-winning charity that has been leading the fight against meningitis for the last 30 years.
With MEATliquor co-founder Yianni Papoutsis having been diagnosed with Meningitis at the age of 17, this is a cause close to their hearts. Losing three toes to necrosis, Yianni attained an appreciation for every moment in his life and has since blazed a demonic trail through the restaurant industry. Each year, there are around 9,000 cases of meningitis in the UK alone and with many of the victims being children it is the disease most feared by parents. The proceeds raised from the sale of the limited edition MEATliquor Chronicles will be used to fund and support the work of dedicated Community Support Officers, who provide care for the thousands of families affected by meningitis.
‘We’re thrilled that a young, vibrant company like MEATliquor, with passion for what it does, also shares our passion – a future where no one dies from meningitis and everybody affected gets the help they need. Partnerships like this are vital in helping us raise awareness and provide ongoing support in hospitals and homes.’ Steve Dayman OBE, founder Meningitis Now.
Starting back in 2009 at the Burning Man festival and the adventures in the original MEATwagon, The MEATliquor Chronicles lays disrespectful waste to the accepted notion of what a cookbook associated with a famous restaurant can and might be. Yes, you will learn how to make perfect homemade burgers and a wealth of other dishes, and yes, you will find cocktail recipes galore. But this is a book with a story and a mission. Yianni and Scott have welcomed Booker Prize-winning author DBC Pierre to help reconstruct their intoxicating and intoxicated journey from South London reprobates to gastronomic enfants terribles. With contributions from a host of bleeding-edge chefs, The MEATliquor Chronicles is the Unholy Cow of all cookery books, and a manifesto of true pleasure.
The MEATliquor Chronicles: Chapter and Verse limited edition is available to buy from the MEATliquor website at an RRP of £100.
Limited edition contents:
– Matchbox slipcase covered in black silk and foil-blocked with the book logo
– Blank binding and red sprayed edges
– Head and tail bands, and bookmark
– Numbered limitation page
– Specially designed chest decorated with the book logo
– Julep tin engraved with unique Bulleit Licker cocktail recipe
– Bottle of Bulleit reserve bourbon signed by Thomas Bulleit

Kim Gordon, from Girl In A Band
Faber Social is proud to announce Girl In A Band by Kim Gordon, publishing in February 24 2015.
Girl In A Band is the highly-anticipated, deeply personal, and introspective exploration of a revolutionary artist and cultural icon. Known for a multitude of creative endeavors, such as: founder/bassist/vocalist of Sonic Youth; acclaimed visual artist; fashion designer and style icon; and her latest band, Body/Head, Gordon crafts a beautifully written, hypnotically-told narrative.
From suburban California to Toronto to New York City’s blossoming and gritty Soho, Kim Gordon reflects on her childhood, her life in art, her band, her marriage, her relationship with her daughter, and numerous other milestones in her life and career. Kim’s writings offer an insightful look at the widely-speculated events in her life that, before now, remained undiscussed.
The world of Girl In A Band is also an atmospheric look at LA in the 60s and 70s, New York City in the 80s and 90s, filled with a cast of characters, all of whom were crucial to the burgeoning art, fashion, and music scene that shaped a new generation.
Kim Gordon is a musician, vocalist, visual artist, record producer, video director, fashion designer, and actress. Gordon, who started out as a visual artist, rose to prominence as the bassist, guitarist, and vocalist of alternative rock band Sonic Youth, which she formed with Thurston Moore in 1981. In 1993 she launched her own fashion line, X-Girl, and continues to work in fashion from time to time. She has appeared in several films including Last Days by Gus Van Zant, as well as episodes of Gossip Girl and Girls. In the spring of 2015, the 303 Gallery in New York will put on a show of her paintings and collages. In 2012, after the breakup of Sonic Youth, Gordon formed Body/Head with friend Bill Nace. She lives in Northampton, New York, and Los Angeles.
There are many ways to cook a burger, to mix a drink, to serve some fries. Yianni Papoutsis and Scott Collins, the men behind #MEATEASY, MEATliquor and MEATmission, share their unique experiences on the wildest frontiers of culinary culture in this, The MEATliquor Chronicles: the unholy cow of all cookery books.

From November 2014, Proud Camden presents Assassinated Beauty; a collection of iconic photographs of the most iconoclastic band of the late twentieth century, Manic Street Preachers. The exhibition will mark the launch of Kevin Cummins’ latest book and captures the essence of a band that understood and manipulated androgynous and decadent imagery.
In the early nineties the Manics exploded onto a British music scene at the peak of rave and acid house. These disaffected and fiercely political young men from the Welsh valleys redefined a new-era by experimenting with alternative glam-rock music. Seminal music photographer Kevin Cummins was ideally placed to capture the essence of the band in their most uncompromising, glam-fixated early years. Cummins first met the Manics on a shoot for NME in Paris in 1992. He went on to photograph not only their first cover of the magazine but also captured the band in their rise to fame. The exhibition documents the period just before the release of Generation Terrorists in 1992 up to Holy Bible in 1994 and the subsequent disappearance of guitarist and lyricist, Richey Edwards. It includes never seen before photographs of the band on and off stage alongside studio shots while they were recording their early singles Motown Junk, You Love Us and Stay Beautiful.
Proud Camden is thrilled to bring you Assassinated Beauty, a unique collection of photographs that shows the Manic Street Preachers whilst at their creative zenith. This is the definitive portrait of one of the last great British rock ‘n’ roll bands.
When: November 7th 2014 – January 11th 2015
Where: Proud Camden, The Horse Hospital, Stables Market, Chalk Farm Road, London NW1 8AH
Times: Monday to Sunday: 11am – 5pm
